Abstract

This study entitles “The Linguistic Patterns of Gender’s Communication in the Sasak Community” is talking briefly about the differences of the linguistic patterns of communication which male and female apply in their daily communication in male-male conversation, female-female conversation, and in male - female conversation; cross – gender’s communication. The reason for taking the topic is to understand and figure out the local culture of Sasak community on the different view and treatment to male and female through gender roles which affect the linguistic patterns of gender’s communication. The writer applied the ethnography approach to see the effects of local culture and gender on the language which is being used by male and female. This study was held in Sinah region of Pengembur village, Pujut subdistric, Central Lombok, where Meriaq – Meriku, Pujut – Sinah dialect is spoken, with the number of 3 (three) Tokoh Adat (local culture community leader) main informants and 43(forty three) people as population and sample. The writer used Pujut – Sinah dialect to show the specialty of dialect which is only spoken in the region of Sinah. The data of the study were collected by using observation and note taking, interview, recording, and interpretation. The data of the study were analyzed by using description. The result of the data analysis shows that the local culture and gender play important roles in influencing the differences of linguistic patterns of gender’s communication in questioning and responding, question tag, using swear words, commanding, and forbidding. This study also suggests that the importance of understanding the communication barrier on gender which might occur in cross gender communication as the way to get the effectiveness of communication and harmony.
