Abstract
This thesis is aimed at considering how the conflicts and the plot of the drama are interrelated. This thesis focuses on the influence of the conflicts between characters toward plot in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. In order to explain the aspects, characters, conflict, and plot are discussed y applying descriptive method, in which the researcher presented the data by taking the relevant quotation from the script of the drama. The researcher used structural approach to analyze the conflicts and the plot of the drama. The result indicated that Jack Worthing as a main character has lived double life. He created Ernest as an excuse to do anything in two different places, in the town and in the country. There were several supporting characters in which they also have a function to create a conflict that is related to the main character and influenced the plot of the story. Conflicts in the drama can be classified into external conflicts and internal conflicts. The external conflicts occurred when the character dealt with other characters (i.e. man against man). The internal conflicts were inside in Jack Worthing himself.(i.e. man against himself). Both internal and external conflicts influenced the plot of the drama. The plot development was then analyzed to find out how the conflict built the story. Algernon’s conflict toward Jack caused him to pretend as Ernest at Manor House in order that he could meet Cecily, and Jack’s internal conflict caused him to vanish his created bother, Ernest. Algernon’s undercover as Ernest at Manor House, Jack’s place, made Jack’s real identity was finally revealed and cleared up Jack’s origin through Miss Prism and Lady Bracknell’s explanation. In conclusion, the internal and external conflicts of Jack and other characters led to the revelation of Jack’s origin.
