Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing the students ability, difficulties and the factors causing students difficulties in writing recount text at the tenth grade high school students in SMAN 6 Mataram.This study used quantitative and qualitative research method. The population of this study was the tenth grade high school students and the sample was the X Science 4 class consisting of 33 students. Based on the data, 1) the ability of the tenth grade high school students are in fair category. There were 18% (6 students) as a good category, 49% (16 students) as a fair category, and 33% (11 students) as a poor category; 2) the students difficulties in writing recount text are difficulties in using past tense, develop the idea, choose the appropriate vocabulary, write summary, articles, pronoun, preposition, spelling and capitalization; 3) the factors causing students difficulties in writing recount text are as follows; (a) students stated that English is a difficult subject to learn, (b) students had lack background knowledge of English, (c) students had poor understanding of the text structure, (d) students had little practices of English, (e) students did not pay enough attention during English class activities, and lastly (f) students did not like learning English subject.
