Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the effectiveness of Dora the Explorer to increase students’ vocabulary mastery at the second year students of SMP 6 Mataram. This research is an experimental research by using quantitative approach. The sample of this research is second year students of SMPN 6 Mataram. The number of population is 204 and the researcher takes two classes for the sample groups. They are; class VIII D and VIII E or 33% for the total number of students; the sample is 68 students of total participant. Afterward the researcher was classified total participant as Experimental and Control group. To collect the data in this research, the researcher gave both classes pre-test. Pre- test is aimed to determine the students’ current proficiency. Later the researcher gave treatment to both groups. The treatment for was held two times in a week, where the Experimental group was treated with Dora the Explorer, the control group 0n the other hand using Dora the Explorer but other method such as conventional method were fill in the blanks in short story, pictures and puzzles. After treated, the researcher obtained the result of pre-test and post-test. From the result, the researcher found the mean score of experimental group is 31.82 and the mean score of control group was 17.88. To analyze the significance of deviation of two mean scores used t-test. The value of t-test is 7.01 while the degree of freedom (df) is 66, the t-table of 66, it is 2.00 for confidence level of .05 or 95% and 2.66 for confidence level of .01 or 99%. In conclusion, the analysis and the interpretation of data show the result that t-test was higher than t-table. The result demonstrated that the use of Dora the Explorer has positive effect in teaching English vocabulary for the second year students of SMPN 6 Mataram in academic years 2010/2011 in English Subject. Therefore, the use of Dora the Explorer is effective to increase students’ vocabulary mastery.
