Abstract
This study deals with language functions. It studies the students’ ability to interact with each other by producing 10 sub categories which cover in six categories of English language function that Van Ek classified. These sub categories are : Greeting, asking someone to do something, pleasure, apologizing, reporting, leaving people, offering, agreement, advising, and hope. The target population of this research is the first year students of SMKN 3 Mataram, and sample of this study is draw and building technique that have 37 students, however, the writer only found 36 students. Data collected by using role-play, the researcher assessed qualitative data that will be recorded, when role-play lasting, researcher assessed Basic English language functions that students produced based on scoring rating scale. This study find out that from 36 students 61 % or 22 of them fall into high category, 39 % or 14 fall into average category, and 0 of them fall into low category.
