Abstract

This thesis entitled “An Analysis of Lexicogrammatical Problems in Students’ Writing Narrative Texts: A Case Study at the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 4 Mataram in Academic Year 2011/2012”. This research aims at knowing students’ ability in using lexicogrammatical in writing narrative text, investigating lexicogramatical problems faced by the eleventh grade students in writing English narrative texts and finding out factors causing the eleventh grade students to have lexocogrammatical problems in writing English narrative texts. This research uses descriptive-quantitative method. The samples of this research are taken by using Simple Random Sampling Technique. 27 out of 212 students are taken as the sample. The data are collected through test and interview. The data obtained are analyzed through three steps; identification, classification and description of lexicogrammatical problems in writing. The result of this research reveals that the eleventh grade students’ ability in using lexicogrammatical in writing narrative text is good because the mean score of students’ writing is 75.52. From 27 students, there are 16 students (59.25%) got higher score than the mean score and 11 students (40.75%) got lower score than the mean score. In writing narrative text, the most students have lexicogrammatical problems related to grammar, vocabulary and mechanic. There are 34.08% (198 students’ error) problems in grammar, 34.60% (201 students’ error) problems in vocabulary and 31.32% (182 students’ error) problems in mechanic. Based on the result of interview, the factor may cause students to have lexicogrammatical problems in writing narrative texts are influenced by students’ motivation in learning English, the ways of teacher in teaching writing, classroom condition and time allotment that do not make them focus on studying English especially writing narrative texts.
