Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether the use of authentic materials in teaching reading effectively improves the students’ reading comprehension. The researcher applied the classroom action research. The group was tested by using Objective Test. The test result shows that the mean score of post test 32,5 which is higher than the mean score of pre test 27,2. It indicates that the score of post test is greater than pre test. The t-test value is 5,65 which is significantly higher than t-table at the confident level of 0,05 equals to 2,0687 and at confident level 0,01 equals to 2,8073 in degrree of freedom (df) 23. In fact, the t-test value is significant for both confident levels. But the fact is there is no difference between teaching authentic material and modified text for the students. The students did not show positive response to the material. Students had difficulties to understand the material because the language inputs of that material were difficult for the students. So, through this research, it can be concluded that the use of Authentic Materials did not significantly improve the students’ Reading Comprehension.
