Abstract
This study is aimed at examining Brown and Levinson theories of politeness strategy in Sasak language request. The study, which was carried out at Batujai village, was focused on analyzing the politeness strategies that Sasak speaker of meriak meriku dialect used in their daily interaction. It examined the four principles of Brown and Levinson whether it is relevant or not to Sasak language and what strategy that is frequently used. Those principles are bald on record (do not attempt to minimize the threat to the hearer’s face), positive politeness (seek to minimize the threat to the hearer’s positive face), negative politeness (oriented towards the hearer’s negative face and emphasize avoidance of imposition on the hearer), and off record (indirect language). The data was gained from native speaker of meriak meriku dialect in Batujai village. To analyze the data, ethnography approach was applied and I became a participant observer in this study. Recording and note taking were used in collecting the data. Having been transcribed and translated, the data are marked by identifying request strategy that occurred. In this study, the researcher found that native speaker of meriak meriku dialect in Batujai followed Brown and Levinson theories during the interactive dialogue, and bald on record is the strategy that most frequently used by Sasak speaker in their daily interaction.
