Abstract

This final project is about students’ ability in writing cardinal and ordinal numbers at the first grade students of SMPN 1 Kediri in academic year 2010/2011. The purposes of this study are to find out the students’ abilities in writing cardinal and ordinal numbers and to analyze factors that contribute to the abilities. The population of this study was all of the first grade students of SMPN 1 Kediri in academic year 2010/2011 with the total sample of 35 students from one class, VIIF. The researcher used test, questionnaire, and interview for this study. In analyzing the data, the researcher gave score to students’ answer of the test, compared the scores to identify and describe the ability or disability of the students. The researcher then analyze the factors which cause the students’ difficulties by identifying students’ answer in test, questionnaire and interview. The result of this study shows that the students’ ability in writing cardinal and ordinal numbers is low because of some factors: (1) interference from the native language, (2) an incomplete knowledge of the target language, (3) the complexity of the target language, (4) the effect of pronunciation, and (5) the lack of instrument for learning. It is proved that 62.9% of the students got score less than 56. Based on this finding, it is suggested that language teachers should give more attention to the students’ abilities in writing cardinal and ordinal numbers. Thus, the language teachers should be able to recognize factors that contribute to students’ abilities in writing cardinal and ordinal numbers, and be able to solve the students’ problems in writing those numbers.
