Abstract

Ultraviolet rays ( UV ) is part of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength between 100 nm - 400 nm. Ultraviolet rays has the ability to reduce or deactivate bacteria, viruses and protozoa without affecting the chemical composition of water. Therefore, it's conduct the research about the analysis of the effect of UV rays intensity and the the length of time of irradiation on the reduction of E.coli number in the well water. The purpose of this research is to know the effect of UV rays intensities, the duration time of irradiation and the position of UV rays in reducing E.coli bacteria number. In the research, it was found that there is influence of UV light intensities to reduce the E.coli bacteria number. The higher intensity of UV rays used, the are more E. coli was reduced. The optimal reduction percentage of E.coli bacteria is about 98.13% - 100% which occurred at the intensity of 241 lux of 30 watt UV lamp and 220 lux of 15 watt UV lamp. For an effect of UV rays irradiation time length obtained that the longer of the irradiation time, the number of E.coli bacteria is more reduced. The optimal reduction of UV rays occurred in the irradiation time about 20 minutes which reaching 98.13% - 100%. Then for UV lamp position from the sample shows that the closer position of UV lamp to the sample, the reduction of E.coli bacteria more optimal. The optimal reduction of UV rays occurs in positions C and D which reach 98.13% - 100%.
