Abstract

This research entitled “students’ difficulties in narrative reading skill, a case study at the eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Mataram in academic year 2010-2011”. The data were collected and analyzed from 36 students of XI IPA-2. By using descriptive method, the researcher focused on exploring difficulty and its type of difficulties that faced by the students in reading narrative text. In analyzing the data, statistical procedure was applied. The main score of the sample was 60,69. This research found that there are difficulties that the students faced and those were indicated by the failure of 21 (twenty one) students (58,3%) in reaching the minimum standard of passing grade. Most of the problems found, to be concerned as difficulties are comprehension (83,8%), retention (80,6%), decoding (50%) and gathering moral value within the text. This research was also followed by interview and questionnaire which indicate the cause of students’ failure in reaching the standard of passing grade, such as; lack of motivation, proper reading sources and materials and not sufficient reading aids.
