Abstract
This study focused on the use of captioned movie in improving the students’ vocabulary mastery at SMAN 1 Praya grade XI. It was aimed at answering the research question “Is captioned movie able to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery”. The population of this study was the XI grader students of SMAN 1 Praya. The sample of this study was the students of class XI IPA 3 as the experimental group and XI IPA 5 as the control group with the total sample of 60 students from both classes. The writer took one month to do the research starting from giving the pre-test, treatment, and then post-test. In the process of treatment, both groups were treated differently. The experimental group was treated using captioned movie, while the control group was treated using noncaptioned movie. The result of the test showed that the mean score of the experimental group which was 30.83, was higher than the mean score of the control group which was 12.33. It was also supported by the t-test gained was 2,9886, higher than t-table in the confidence level of .05 (95%) and .01 (99%). Therefore, the Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Thus, it should be altered into the Alternate Hypothesis (Ha). Based on the findings, it is suggested that captioned movie can be used by the English teachers as an alternative teaching material to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.
