Abstract

The prevalence of antibiotic usage in self-medication is quite high in various classes including students. The use of antibiotic in self-medication may increase antibiotic resistance and side effects. The level of knowledge influences the use of antibiotic in self-medication. The purpose of this study was to describe the level of knowledge of antibiotic use in self-medication. The study was conducted in March-July 2018 in the First Year (TPB) students of the Mataram University. There were 400 people who drawn randomly as the samples with cross-sectional metode. The data on demographic characteristics and level knowledge were obtained using a validated questionnaire. The data was analyzed descriptively. 379 out of 421 students had used antibiotic. It consisted of 119 male and 260 female with average age of 17-18 years. Most of student backgrounds came from high school. The results showed that the level knowledge of students was high (5,4%), moderate (63,1%), and low (31,4%). The knowledge that is related to condition and the impact of improper antibiotic usage needs to be improved. The level of knowledge of respondents is classified as moderate. Therefore, the appropriate and wise understanding of antibiotic usage needs to be improved.
