Abstract
This study aims to analyze the taboo words used in The Wolf of Wall Street movie using sociolinguistic approach. The length of this movie is 3 hours and there were 328 taboo words gathered. The objectives of this study are to identify the meaning, types, factors and the reasons why those taboos are used. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method for describing the existing condition in the movie. The data were in the form of utterances, while the contexts of the data were the video of The Wolf of Wall Street movie. The data were collected by selecting dialogues containing taboo words after watching the video and used transcript of the movie as additional reference. The researcher focused only on dialogue uttered by the main character in the movie. The results of this study are stated as follows. First, the meaning of taboo words can be classified into two; they are conceptual meaning (21 or 6.40%) and associative meaning (307 or 93.60%). Second, the types of taboo words can be classified into four types: epithets (10 or 3.04%), profanity (13 or 3.97%), vulgarity (22 or 6.70%), and obscenity (283 or 86.29%). Third, there are four potential factors that influence the formation of taboo words, they are; participants (105 or 31.01%), purpose of conversation & attitudes of participants (193 or 58.85%), content or subject matter (23 or 7.01%), and setting (7 or 2.13%). Another data analysis reveals that the used of taboo words by the main character are because of some reasons: to draw attention to oneself (79 or 24.09%), to show contempt (111 or 33.85), to be provocative (89 or 27.13%), and to mock authority (49 or 14.93%).
