Abstract
This study is entitled An Analysis of Translation Strategies Used by Subtitle Writer of “Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Men Tell No Tales” Movie. The objectives of this research are: 1) to describe the translation strategies used in the movie subtitle from English (SL) to Indonesian (TL) and; 2) to find out the most dominant translation strategy used in the movie subtitle. This study focuses on Gottlieb’s classification of translation strategies on movie subtitle, they were: Expansion, Paraphrase, Transfer, Imitation, Transcription, Dislocation, Condensation, Decimation, Deletion, and Resignation. Then, the data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The sources of the data were original English scripts or dialogues from the movie and Indonesian subtitle that was written by subscene user imotommy. The documentation method was used to collect the data from the movie. The findings show that there were nine of ten strategies applied by the subtitle writer of the Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Men Tell No Tales movie, they were: Expansion (7,49%), Paraphrase (26,61%), Transfer (38,50%), Imitation (16,02%), Transcription (3,10%), Condensation (3,35%), Decimation (0,77%), Deletion (4,13%), and Resignation (0,77%). This study found that transfer was the most dominant strategy used in the subtitle of the movie of Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Men Tell No Tales.
