Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the milk fat content of crossbred Ettawa goats given various levels of sesbania leaf (sesbania grandiflora) (0%; 10%; 20% dan 30%) in forages. The experiment was conducted at “Gopala” goat farm on Juni up to July 2014 by using 16 lactating crossbred Ettawa goats (The first and the second lactation; two months lactation period; 1.5 to 2.5 years of age) with the initial body weight of 36.3 ± 5.3 kg. Completely randomized design (CRD) was used in this experiment which consists of 4 groups of goats (4 goats each as replicates) and then each group was given one of the levels of the sesbania leaf treatments (0%, 10%, 20 and 30% of forages) with basal diets of field grass, banana peel and concentrate which composed of rice bran and “rontokan gorengan” (1:1) and 3% of urea. The results showed that the increase levels of the sesbania leaf in the forages did not influence milk fat content (P>0.05). It was, however, a trend that the milk content decreased (7.66%; 6.27%; 6.58% and 5.94% for 0%; 10%; 20% and 30% of level sesbania leaf of forages respectively) by increasing the sesbania leaf levels. The 30% of sesbania leaf level gave the best response in milk production (426.7 ml/head/day) with the dry matter intake of 1.38 kg/day and the lowest milk fat content of crossbred Ettawa goats. It is suggested that it is important to do further experiment to find out the optimum level of sesbania leaf in forages to get maximum milk production with the lower milk fat content.
