Abstract

The thesis entitled ―An Analysis of Symbolism in Percy Bysshe Shelley‘s Poem ―Love‘s Philosophy‖ and William Wordsworth‘s Poem ―I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud‖. The data was analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. To collect the data, the researcher taken from internet, articles and library research. There were two short of data that researcher used, the first one was primary data, the poem itself, Love’s Philosophy and I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. And the second was secondary data; the data was taken from several books, some thesis, journals and websites. To analyze the data, the researcher analyzes the poem by applying Michael Riffaterre‘s method. Riffatere‘s method belongs to semiotic approach to poetry. There are four substantial ideas to analyzing poems are heuristic reading, hermeneutic reading, matrix and hypogram. In this thesis, the researcher found that there are many nature‘s elements used in this poem. Those elements make the poem more interesting. The results of this study showed that the nature‘s elements in Love‘s Philosophy consist of: fountains, rivers, ocean, winds, mountains, heaven, waves, flowers, sunlight, earth, moonbeams and sea. While in I Wandered Lonely as a cloud poem consist of: cloud, valleys, hills, daffodils, lake, trees, breeze, stars, milky way, and waves.
