Abstract

This study focuses on analysing code switching used by the presenters of the “Sasak Tulen” program On Lombok TV by using theory of code switching proposed by Poplack (1980) and Hoffman (1991). The aims of this study are to identify and describe the types of code switching, finding the most dominant type and also identify and describe the reasons for the presenters code switch their language in "SasakTulen" program on Lombok TV. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach. The data are the utterances that contain Sasak-Indonesian code switching collected from three episodes of “Sasak Tulen” program on Lombok TV that were broadcasted on 30th of March, 2nd of April, and 29th of April 2019. The result of this study shows that there are 111 utterances that contain code switching from three episodes of “SasakTulen” program along with the three types of code switching used by the presenters in the program : intrasentential switching, inter- sentential switching, and tag switching. In details, there are 81 intra-sentential switching, 6 inter-sentential switching, and 24 tag switching. Out of the seven reasons of code switching proposed by Hoffman, this study shows that there are only six reasons found in this study : 60 data of talking about a particular topic, 0 data of quoting somebody else, 6 data of showing empathy about something, 13 data of interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connector), 10 data of repetition used for clarification, 12 data of intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor, and 10 data of expressing group identity.
