Abstract

Communication is the way of people to interact each other. By communicating people can convey information or expressing something to the addressee, such as ordering, requesting, stating, promising, thanking, asking, complaining, apologizing, declaring, etc. So, every utterance in communication contains meaning or purpose. The analysis is based on the types of illocutionary acts using Searle‟s theory. They are representative, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative. The method is used in analyzing is a qualitative and quantitative descriptive method. From those four categories of illocutionary acts which founded, directive illocutionary act mostly used in Dory‟s utterances. It appears 12 times (48%) in Dory‟s utterances. The next is representative; it is used 10 times (40%) by Dory. Then, expressive, it is used twice (8%) and commissive it is used once (4%), and next declarative is 0 case (0%) appears in Dory‟s utterances. To understand the language, the hearer can not only know the meaning that the speaker says, but also the situation whether it is public or private, formal or informal, who is being addressed and who might be able overhear. Context is needed to know the intended meaning of the utterance. Context has an important role in interpreting a sentence. The same utterance will have different meaning if the context of each utterance is different.
