Abstract
This study examines the cultural content in the English textbooks for grade ten used in the Philippines and Indonesia. The current study tries to make a comparison between English textbooks used in ESL and EFL situation which focusing on the texts. The two textbooks used in this study are “FACETS” (2015) from the Philippines and “Bahasa Inggris” (Rev. 2017) by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. The objectives of the study are to find out the types of cultural content in textbook which leans on the theory set by Cortazzi and Jin (1999) and the categories for evaluating cultural content in ESL/EFL textbooks set by Byram et al. (1994) and by Risager (1991). The present study is qualitative in nature and the method used is theory-based content analysis. The data analyzed displayed in quantitative data which focuses on the amount (frequencies and percentages) of cultural information contained in both textbooks which is also supported with descriptive data (qualitative). The result of the study shows international culture materials has the highest percentage in “FACETS” textbook meanwhile half of the texts in “Bahasa Inggris” textbook contain source culture. As for the categories of culture, it was found that National Cultural Heritage dominates “FACETS” textbook where the majority discusses micro-level culture, on the other hand “Bahasa Inggris” majorly presents belief and behavior and stereotypes and national identity of which focus is on macro-level culture.
