Abstract

The aim of this study was to get empirical evidence about the use of Crossword Puzzle in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. The method used in this study was quantitative method. This study was an experimental study (pre-posttest group design) and conducted for a Month started on May 13th until June 27th 2019 at SMP N 2 Pringgasela involving 45 students of seventh grade. Data collection method was by pre-test and post-test. The data derived from pre-posttest scores were processed and analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of this study showed that there was a significant improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using Crossword Puzzle. Mean score 48.70 and the mean score of the post- test is 79.65. And also the result of calculation showed that at the significant degree of 5%, the value of t-test > t-table distribution: (2.645 > 1.681). it indicated that the value of t-test was higher than t-table distribution which means the use of Crossword Puzzle was effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade students of SMP N 2 Pringgasela.
