Abstract

This study aims to decribe students’ competence, difficulties, and factors that contributes to the difficulties in writing report texts. This study was conducted at SMAN 7 Mataram using descriptive qualitative method. The population of this study was the 10th grade students of SMAN 7 Mataram in Academic Year 2019/2020. The sample of the study are 60 students who were chosen by using simple random sampling technique, they were XIPA2 class (30 students) and XIPS1 class (30 students). This is because the population relatively has the same characteristics in learning English at the school. The data were collected through writing test and questionnaires. The data analized in this research was from the students’ test result including content, grammar, vocabulary and mechanics. The data then analyzed by using the theory of Brown (1920). Having analyzed the collected data, the result shows that the students of X IPS1, there were 8 (26,67%) students in excellent level, 12 (40,00%) students in good level, 5 (16,67%) students in average level, and 5 (16,67%) students in poor level.). Meanwhile, for the students X IPA2, there were 16 (53,33%) students in excellent level, 4 (13,33%) students in good score, 4 (13,33%) students in average level, and 6 (20,00%) students in poor level. It means that, there. It means that, the students of X IPA2 understand report texts more than students of X IPS1. They still have little understanding about report texts. The result of this study revealed that the difficulties faced by the students were mostly on starting their writing and putting right verbs in their sentences. Furthermore, the factors that caused the difficulties were students little understanding in using vocabulary, grammar and students’ understanding of the text structure.
