Abstract

This research is pragmatics approach study of Analysis of Illocutionary Act by the Main Characters in Chronicles of Narnia 1 – The Lion, The White Witch, and The Wardrobe. This research aims to find out the illocutionary acts performed by the main characters in The Chronicles of Narnia 1 – The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe movie. Specifically, this research focus on identifying what types of illocutionary act used based on Searle’s classification of speech acts, analyzing the intended meaning used by the main characters and discovering the most dominant types of illocutionary acts used by the main characters in the movie. This research used the script of the movie containing dialogues as the source of data and this research applied a qualitative descriptive method. Thus, the data were described in the form of words, phrases and sentences. The result of the research shows the 5 illocutionary acts are produced by the main characters in the movie. They are assertives (53 utterances), directives (32 utterances), expressives (47 utterances), commisive (11 utterances) and declaration (4 utterances) with the total 147 illocutionary acts. Based on the findings, the most dominant illocutionary acts used is assertives illocutionary acts with 53 utterances. Moreover, utterances indicating speech acts by main characters have an intended meaning which the function of the pragmatic approach is applied such as when the main characters perform their illocutionary act directly in several tone of voice and use body language to emphasize their speech acts which are performed via eye contact, facial expression, and gesture. Those nonverbal strategies have certain functions which concerned with the speech act or message being sent by the speaker to the hearer.
