Abstract

The research aimed to find out the types and the causes of grammatical errors made by most of English students when chatting and updating status in WhatsApp messenger. A descriptive qualitative method was used in conducting this research. . The data was taken from the WhatsApp chats and post made by the 31 English students from C Morning Class in 7th semester of Mataram University. The data description showed that there are two types of grammatical errors found in students’ WhatsApp chats and posts namely Morphological and Syntactical errors. Morphological error comprised 36 errors, accounting for about 48.64% . Syntactical errors, Noun Phrase errors comprised 15 errors, accounting for about 20.27% and Verb Phrase errors comprised 23 errors, accounting for about 31.09%. Also from this study, it’s found that grammatical errors accurated in the students’ WhatsApp chats and posts were influenced by the intralingual and interlingual transfer. Most errors were influenced by intralingual transfer with a total of 89.19% grammatical errors.
