Abstract

Eucheuma sp is one of the carrageenan-producing seaweed. Nowadays, the use of carrageenan is more widespread in food and non-food industry. Some species of Eucheuma sp that produce a lot of carrageenan are Eucheuma spinosum and Eucheuma cottonii. Both this species are widely cultivated in the Gerupuk bays, Lombok Tengah, NTB. But in its development Ecucheuma cottonii more dominant species of seaweed farming activities in there. One of the water conditions that affect carrageenan and the growth of Eucheuma cottonii is the water depth. This study aims to determine the yield carrageenan and growth performance of Eucheuma cottonii cultured at different depths. This research was conducted in Teluk Gerupuk, Lombok Tengah, NTB in June - August 2010. Eucheuma cottonii were cultured at four different depths: 0 m, 50 m, 100 m and 150 m. Eucheuma cottoni was harvested after 42 days and the yield of carrageenan was measured using a household scale. The results show that there is a relationship between the depth with the yield of carrageenan and growth rate of Eucheuma cottoni. Increasing the depth had caused the yield of the carrageenan from Eucheuma cottonii to increase but its growth rate declined. Cultivation of Eucheuma cottonii at a depth of 150 m showed the highest mean of yield of the carrageenan (57.52%)
