Abstract

This thesis is entitled “a linguistic taboo in Sasak community: a case study at Kekalik village”, investigated the types, meanings and the functions of linguistic taboos in Sasak community in Kekalik village. This descriptive analysis study applied observation, interview, recording and note taking in obtaining the data. The data of this study were utterances containing taboo words and list of taboo words. After conducting the research, linguistic taboo applied by Sasak community in Kekalik village can be divided into two broad categories: based on its object and based on the word using context. Linguistic taboo based on its object, can be grouped into seven types: animals, death, excretory, religious, sexuality, supernatural, and swearing. Furthermore, linguistic taboo based on the context, can be grouped into general taboo and context-specific taboo. The meaning of those linguistic taboos is depended on the context or on the speaker’s purposes that are performing by uttering those linguistic taboos. Most of them turned to be taboo. In addition, there are four functions of the use of taboo words in Kekalik Sasak community; they are as the expression of anger, expression of sorrow, expression of insult, and the exclamation of surprise. Thus, the strongest reasons that underlie the use of linguistic taboo were the psychological factor, where the speaker tends to use it in order to express their anger, and to insult the other people.
