Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out factors that influence students’ participation in speaking class. The study used qualitative research method and used purposive sampling technique in getting the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaires and interview. The result of data indicated that afraid of making mistake, anxiety and lack of self confidence were common factors that influenced low students’ participation from psychological factors. While from lecturer aspect, unvaried and uninteresting method, lecturer domination and uninteresting topic caused students’ reluctance. Only few students have problem with classroom condition. The used of group discussion, interesting topic, comprehensible language and encouragement from lecturer belonged to factors that promote students’ participation.
