Abstract

This thesis entitled “English Teachers’ Problems in teaching Grammar: A Case Study at SMAN 1 Narmada” aims at describing problems in grammar teaching that teachers experience and their causing factors. The respondents of the research were 6 English teachers of SMAN 1 Narmada. The data for fulfilling the purpose of research were taken via open-ended questionnaires and interview. After doing the research, it was found that there were three main problems that the teachers stated as their English grammar teaching difficulties. These deal with the students issues (the students’ inert knowledge problem), the teaching issues, and the regulation of the curriculum (the time allocated for the teaching and the teaching materials). The contributing factors found to cause those problems were mostly the students’ lack of vocabulary, poor understanding of the subject matters, the lack of interest to practice and learning, the learning system applied, the influence of local and national language, and the regulation of the curriculum.
