Abstract

This study entitled “Exploring Gender Belief About Language Learning in EFL Context (Study at FKIP, Mataram University in Academic Year 2015/2016)”. The aims of this research are: (1) to explore how male and female students’ in FKIP Mataram University beliefs about their language learning (2) to find out whether there is significant difference of language learning belief among male and female students (3) to investigate how gender affects one’s belief about language learning. This research investigated male and female students’ belief in learning language using concept of BALLI (Belief About Language Learning Inventory), consisting of 34 item questions which was administered to 50 students selected by random sampling. The data were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method and processed in number of sequences i.e. accumulate according to questionnaire items, tabulate using tallies and classify them based on each category. Based on the questionnaire, the researcher used five categories of language learning beliefs to measure whether there was significant different belief among male and female students i.e. (a) foreign language aptitude (b) difficulty of language learning (c) nature of language learning (d) learning and communication strategies (e) motivation and expectation. Results of this study show that (1) both male and female students share similar views in almost all item questions of language learning beliefs with the exception of six items. (2) Significant different beliefs among male and female students: (a) foreign language aptitude: the data show that female students had foreign language aptitude significantly difference compared to male students. Female students had tendency to believe that it was easier for them to learn a language when they were in childhood in comparison of adulthood. They also claim that some people had special ability to learn English. Many of them disagreed with acquisition of foreign language will enable learn another one and they remark that they had special ability for learning foreign languages. (b) Difficulty of language learning: both male and female share similar opinion of their difficulties in learning a language. (c) Nature of language learning: the finding reveals that there was significant difference between male and female students in nature of language learning. Female students thought that it was easier for them to learn English in English speaking culture and majority of them perceive that the most important part of learning a language was how to translate from their own native language. (d) Learning and communication strategies: there was no significant difference between male and female students in varieties to deals with strategies for learning a language. (e) Motivation and expectation: there was no significant difference both group of male and female students as means of language learning for communication and developing carrier. (3) The significant different beliefs of language learning among male and female students signify that gender had influences in one’s language learning.
