Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing and finding out students’ needs of English and recommendation for Teaching English at Non-English Department (TENED). This research has been conducted at Sociology Education Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Mataram with total population 45 students and it is also as the research subject. This research has been guided by the implementation of English for Specific Purpose (ESP) that emphasize on teaching learning English based on students’ needs. The data were collected by using test (placement test), questionnaire, and interview. The result of placement test showed most of the students’ level of English are in the basic level. While the result of questionnaire and interview are different perception between students and institution about the learning need. High level of expectation, low level of students’ ability, a big number of students in a class, and a limited number of allocation time become problems in achieving the learning target. The recommendations given in this research consider on students need at present as students and at future as job seekers. These recommendations are divided into short term and long term goal that maintains the target learning by preparing students as students and preparing students for their future.
