Abstract

This thesis entitled “The Analysis of Character and Characterization in Chris Cleave’s novel The Other Hand”. It is aimed to describe the character and characterization of the characters in the novel, The Other Hand. The data of this research were gathered through library research from the novel The Other Hand by Chris Cleave as a primary resource of the data and secondary data also taken from some articles and books related to the topic taken from library research and internet. The method used in this thesis is descriptive method. The discussion is facilitated by quoting some paragraphs which indicate character and characterization in the novel. The researcher found there are twelve characters in this novel such as Little Bee, Sarah O’Rourke, Andrew O’Rourke, Charlie O’Rourke, Lawrence Osborn, Nkiruka, Yevette, Sari Girl, The Girl With No Name, Mr Ayres, Albert and Clarissa. There are three categories of characters. First category according to the character’s role such as major and minor character, second category according to the images such as protagonist and antagonist character, third category according to the change of attitude of character such as flat and round character. Besides that, there are two methodologies of characterization such as direct and indirect characterization which are used by the author in the novel.
