Abstract

This study aimed at finding out whether the use of Mime Story Technique is effective to improve students‘ vocabulary mastery. This study was designed as the experimental study which applied pre- test and post test to collect the data. There were 72 students taken as the sample; 36 students as the experimental group and 36 students as the control group . In conducting the research, the experimental group was treated by using Mime Story Technique and the control group by using Direct Reading Method. The result showed that the total score of pre-test and post test for the experimental group was 2780 and 3185, and the total score of pre-test and post-test for the control group was 3085 and 3285. The mean score for experimental group in pre-test was 77.22 and in post-test was 88.47 and the mean score for control group was 85.69 in pre-test and 89.03 in post-test. The mean deviation score for the control gruop was 3.34 and the mean score for the experimental group was 11.25. However, there were significant differences in students vocabulary mastery of two groups after the treatment. The Experimental Group showed a better improvement than the Control Group. The value of t- test after the data calculation on the formula was 3.0423 and higher than the critical value of t – table at the confidence level .05 (95%) is (1.99444) and the confidence level .01(99%) with (2.64790) in degree of freedom (df) 70. Therefore, HO is rejected and H which stated ―the use of Mime Story Technique is effective in improving students‘ vocabulary mastery of narrative text‖ is accepted.
