Abstract

The objective of this research entitled “The Effectiveness of Kagan Structures in Teaching Speaking on the first grade students at MTs. Putri NW Narmada in academic year 2014/2015” was to find out the effectiveness of using Kagan Structures strategy in improving students’ speaking ability. The study used Quantitative-Experimental research. The population of the study was 219 of the seventh grade students of MTs Putri NW Narmada and the sample was 64 students which was divided into experimental and control group. Each group consisted of 32 students. The collected data were analyzed by using t-Test formula. The results of the data analysis showed that mean score of pre-test in control group was 47.25, mean score of post-test in control group was 55.5 and mean score of pretest in experimental group was 46.25, mean score of post-test in experimental group was 67.03. After analyzing the data of post-test in control group and post-test in experimental group, the t-test was 4.539, the t-table with degree of freedom (df) 62 and level of significance at 5 % (0.05) was 1.669 and at 1% (0.01) was 2.3880. Based on the data analysis above, the alternative hypothesis was accepted because t-test was higher than t-table (1.669<4.539>2.388). It also meant that teaching speaking using Kagan Structures strategy was effective in improving students’ speaking ability.
