Abstract

This experimental research of pretest-posttest control group design was conducted to discover the effect of using flashcards in pronunciation teaching at grade VII SMPN 1 Gunungsari West Lombok in Academic Year 2015/2016. Using Cluster Sampling Technique, where the population was 268 students in 9 classes, two classes were selected randomly. Class VII G was treated as Control Group (CG) whereas class VII C was treated as Experimental Group (EG). They were taught for 4x40 minutes with the same spelling-pronunciation table as the pronunciation material. Flashcards were applied on pronunciation teaching only in EG. Using reading aloud technique student’s pronunciation was scored by two raters where the average score of the two was taken as the final score. As a quantitative research, students’ pronunciation scores before and after teaching were computed to confirm the null hypothesis proposed. For data analysis, T Test with confidence level of 95% (probability of .05) in SPSS 12.0 for Windows was utilized. Paired-Sample T Test for each group with t obs > t with significance value less than 0.5 revealed that CG and EG after learning spelling-pronunciation table had score increase. IndependentSample T Test for all groups with t table obs > t with significance value less than 0.5 revealed that score increase of EG was lower than that of CG. Thus, flashcards was not effective in increasing students’ pronunciation. table
