Abstract

This study entitled ‘The Students’ Strategies in Improving Speaking Skill: A Comparative Study at the Grade IX Students of SMPN 6 Mataram in Academic Year 2015/2016’ is aimed at finding out the students’ strategy in improving speaking skill, which strategy is better and how the students applied those strategy. The population of this study was 316 students, and the sample was 32 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. To collect the data, the writer used four kinds of techniques; questionnaire, observation, interview and documentation. By using quantitative method, the writer analyzed students’ level and found the mean score of speaking was in very high category. The result of questionnaire show the most strategy used is metacognitive strategy (43.75%) or 14 students, followed by cognitive strategy (31.25%) or 10 students, compensantory strategy (15.62%) or 5 students and social strategy (9.37%) or 3 students. All of the strategies are good in improving speaking skill, but there is no significant different among them because the F value (0.00003) is lower than the F table. It indicates that all strategies have the same effectiveness in improving speaking skill. In term of motivation the students have strong motivation in learning English. The thing that distinguish the way the students use the strategy is in term of the time they begin to learn English.
