Abstract

This thesis entitled “An Analysis of the Main Character‟s Motivation in The Book Thief film. In analyzing the main character‟s motivation in this film, the writer used the Motivation Theory of Abraham Maslow by using descriptive method as the method of data analysis. This study focuses on the actions that shown by Liesel Meminger as the main character in The Book Thief film that confirms the Motivation Theory of Abraham Maslow and the impacts of motivations in Liesel‟s performance. The result of this study is the writer found that there are several needs that motivate her to act, such as physiological needs, safety needs, love and belongingness needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. The physiological needs were fulfilled by eating and sleeping. The safety needs were fulfilled by burning a book, running into a hiding place, and injuring herself. The love and belongingness needs were fulfilled by writing a letter to her mother, reading a book for Max, looking for Max, and embracing Ilsa. The esteem needs were fulfilled by beating Franz, learning to read, learning to memorize word, and learning to write. The self-actualization needs were fulfilled by describing the day for Max, telling a story, and writing a story. Moreover, the writer found there are some impacts of motivation to Liesel‟s performances in The Book Thief film, in terms of successfulness, character change, and maturity
