Abstract

The objective of this study entitled “An Analysis of Grammatical Error in Writing Procedural Text By VIIth Grade Junior High School Students” is to find out the types and the causes of grammatical errors in students’ writing. The study uses qualitative descriptive method. The population of the study is 184 students from the grade VII junior high school and the samples are 35 students. The technique of data collecting is by giving written test to students. The students were instructed to make procedural text based on 3 topics, those are: (1) How to cook an instant noodle with an egg and vegetables, (2) How to make pelecing ‘Lombok traditional food’, (3) How to make hot fried rice. After analysing the data, the researcher found 4 types of grammatical errors made by the students, those are; omission, addition, misforamtion, and misordering. Based on the 4 types of grammatical errors, there were four causes of errors that mostly found in students writing, those are; carelessness, inadequate learning, faulty in teaching, and hypercorrection.
