Abstract

Learning a different language is sometimes difficult since the target language has different rules compared to the native language. These differences sometimes cause students to over generalize the rules when using it. Overgeneralization means the process of expanding the rules of language to items where the rules do not apply. Producing overgeneralizations in students’ writings is unavoidable. Therefore, the investigation toward those overgeneralizations is necessary. This case study, took 25students of XI IPA 3 ofSMAN 1 Gunungsari in 2015/2016. The students were asked to writethrough several stages of writing test. The result of the study showed that the most common overgeneralization made by students of SMAN 1 Gunungsari were article-related error with 13.94%. Present participle-related error with 1.97% followed by infinitive and singular/plural-related error with 1.84%, bothof them havesamenumber of occurrences. Pronoun-related error with 1.18%andmodal-related error with 0.52%. The last place was occupied by noun clause-related errorwith0.The causesof those overgeneralizations were both interlingual factor that is the interference of the first language and intralingual factor that is the complexity of the target language as well as less knowledge of students’.
