Abstract

This research is about questioning technique that is used by English teacher in English classroom, especially at VIII J class in SMPN 1 Gunungsari. The objectives of this research are: a.) to know the types of questions usually asked by the teacher in the classroom by seeing the result of Flanders Interaction Analysis (FIA) system of classroom activities; b.) To know how the teacher applied the questioning technique during teaching and learning process. This research is focused on the questioning technique that is applied by the teacher during teaching and learning process. The method of this research is descriptive. Then, the population of this research is 349 that consist of 10 classes of second grade students and one English teacher. This research uses random sampling technique to get the sample of the research. The total of the sample is 35 respondents that consist of students of VIII J class and one English teacher. The methods of data collection are observation and interview. The procedures of data analysis are identification, grouping, and description and explanation process. Finally, the results on discussion part of this research are: 1.) There are three types of questions that the teacher used to ask the students in the classroom, those are yes/ no question, w-h question, and leading question. Then, ‘w-h question’ is the type of question that mostly used by the teacher. 2.) There are some kinds of questioning technique that the teacher usually uses in teaching English, and the techniques are the common techniques that most of teacher used in teaching and learning process. The techniques are giving simple question, T- Time, do not let student’s domination, do not ask “Do you understand?’, do not deny the student’s answer, etc. Then, ‘do not deny the student’s answer’ is the most technique of questioning that the teacher used in teaching and learning process. Therefore, the types of question and the kinds of questioning technique are the important things that the teacher should be aware and consider appropriately in teaching and learning activity.
