Abstract

Abstract The purposes of this research are to find out (1) what types of errors are made by students in writing narrative text, and (2) which type of error in writing narrative text is the most dominantly made by students. This research used four types of errors based on Dulay and Krashen (1982); error of omission, error of addition, error of misformation, and error of misordering. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The population in this research was all second grade students of Senior High School No. 2 Jonggat academic year 2015-2016 who sat in 5 classes. Each class consisted of 20, 20, 28, 28, and 30 students. Purposive sampling technique was used in this research, and XI IPA 1 was chosen as a sample that consisted of thirty students. Writing test was used as the research instrument. The results of this research showed students made 412 or 53.72 % of misformation errors, 196 or 25.36 % of omission errors, 109 or 14.38 % of addition errors, and 48 or 6.54 % of misordering errors. The dominant type of error is misformation error. The students made 412 or 53.72% errors from 765 of total number of errors in writing narrative text. Students produced error because they could not translate the words and sentences from Indonesian to English. They translated the sentences word for word.
