Abstract

This thesis deals with decoding the symbols and historical case in The Lost Symbol, a novel by Dan Brown. This study aims to describe about the process of decoding the symbols and the relationship between the Freemasons, a controversial brotherhood organization that still exist, and the United States based on historical case. In this novel, Dan Brown tells some history of the Freemasons’ relation with the founding of the United States, particularly with Washington, DC. This thesis focuses on some symbols, such as the Hand of the Mysteries, the Freemasons, Melencolia I, Isaac Newton, and the House of the Temple. The data were gained through library research, where the main data were taken from The Lost Symbol novel. The writer also found some books, articles and website that related to the study itself as secondary sources. Then, the data were analyzed through qualitative descriptive method. The result indicated that the great evidence of the relationship between the Freemasons and the founding of the United States based on historical case is The House of the Temple which is a place for worshipping and also a place to gain knowledge for the Masons and exactly located in the heart of the world government: Washington, DC.
