Abstract

This thesis entitled “Students’ Difficulties in Comprehending English Reading Text: A Case Study at Ninth Grade Students in SMPN 1 Gunungsari” was aimed to find the factors that caused students’ difficulties in comprehending Englsih reading text. The population of this study was ninth grade students in SMPN 1 Gunungsari. The sample used in this study was a purposive sampling because the writer already knew the background of students that became participants, and the sample was three classes from ninth grade students. In collecting the data, the writer applied two instruments; test and questionnaire. From the result of the test, the writer determined the students’ ability in comprehending English reading text and kinds of difficulties in comprehending English reading text. The result of the questionnaire used to determine the factors that caused students’ difficulties in comprehending English reading text. The mean score of the test done by the students was 52.03, it showed that students’ ability was in poor category. The kinds of difficulty were hard to find a main idea and find a specific name. It indicated that their comprehension in English text was poor and their vocabulary knowledge was insufficient. The factors that caused difficulties divided into three perpective; learner’s background, teaching tehcnique, and learner’s environment. The result showed that students agreed that their background knowledge of English was very low (79.60 %), uninteresting teaching technique applied by their teachers also caused their difficulties (77.75 %). Moreover, the learner’s environments (school and home) were not support their achievement in learning English (26.6 %).
