Abstract

This study is aimed to reveal students’ perception toward lecturers’ attitudes and favorable lecturers’ attitudes based on students’ point of view. The subject of this study were 60 students from three grade semester (4th,6th, and 8th) of the English Department of FKIP Mataram University. The instrument of this research used questionnaire, personal interview, and recording. The questionnaire was used to obtain information about students’ perception toward lecturers’ attitudes consisted of twenty items of questionnaire, and four questionnaire of personal interview and recording (open-ended question). In close questions there are five categories of lecturers’ attitudes (friendly, democratic, fairness, cheerfulness, and authority) were isolated as the variables to be responded using like scale. Open-ended questions used to obtain information about idealized lecturer attitudes included motivating and non-motivating attitudes. Personal interview and recording was used to obtain further information to complete the data. Then, the data were tabulated and analyzed qualitatively. The result of the study indicated that most of the students (54%) stated that the lecturers’ attitudes are unfavorable for their learning, while the rest (46%) stated that more favorable. Toward lecturers’ idealized attitudes, this study found and classified fourteen lecturers’ attitudes such as: humorous, interested, patience, easy going, cheerful, professional, creative, tolerant, objective, attentive, democratic, friendly, discipline, and authority. The study also found and classified nine attitudes that unmotivated students’ to learn, such as: intolerant, temperament, subjective, unhumorous, unfriendly, inattentive, unprofessional, monotone, and indiscipline.
