Abstract

This study entitled “Students’ Perceptions of Listening Problems: A Case Study at Listening 3 Afternoon Class of English Education Program of FKIP Mataram University in Academic Year 2015/2016”. The aims of this research are: (1) to identify students’ perceptions of problems that they encounter in listening skill at Listening 3 afternoon class of English Education Program of FKIP Mataram University in academic year 2015/2016 and (2) to find out the causes of the problems. The data were collected from 33 students selected by cluster random sampling through questionnaire, observation and interview. Then, the data were tabulated using tallies and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method. Based on the findings or significant percentages, the result of the study shows that most students sometimes experienced difficulty to quickly remember words or phrases which they have just heard. Moreover, frequently encountered listening problems of students were noise around, speed of speaker’s speech and idioms. Difficulty to quickly remember words or phrases which they have just heard was caused by limited capacity of short-term memory and lack of listening practice. Difficulty to concentrate with noise around was caused by failure to concentrate with noises around. Difficulty to understand listening texts when speakers spoke too fast was caused by failure to concentrate when speakers spoke too fast, inability to control speed of speaker’ speech and the habit listening to the texts when speakers spoke slowly. Difficulty to understand listening texts in which there were many idioms was caused by lack of knowledge on idiomatic expressions.
