Abstract

This study is aimed to reveal students’ perceptions on the lecturers’ techniques to engage students in the teaching of speaking class. The subjects of this study were fifty (50) students on 5th, 7th, and 9th semester in the English Department of FKIP, Mataram University of Mataram. To collect the data, the researcher used questionnaire as the insrument. Close and open-ended questions were used to obtain information about students’ perceptions on the lecturers’ techniques to engage students in the teaching of speaking class. Close ended question consisteds of eleven items with six questions in every items and open ended question consisteds of four items questions. Close-ended question were composed to discover students’ perception on the effect of lecturers’ techniques in the teaching of speaking toward students’ engagement and it was responded by respondents using Likert- scale ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. Moreover, open ended question was applied to obtain the answer based on subjects’ experience about the kinds of lecturers’ teaching techniques in the speaking class that motivate students to speak English in the classroom. Then, the data were tabulated and analyze qualitatively. The results of this study shows that the majority of the respondents believe that the techniques used by lecturers in speaking class could engage them to practice speaking English and participate in the class when the techniques comprised of students-based activities. Moreover, most of the respondents prefered eight teaching techniques to motivate them to speak English and do oral participation in the class. The techniques were monologue presentation, role play, brainstorming, games, interview, discussion, story telling and report. Nevertheless, the respondents perceive that debate and work in pairs did not motivate and encouraged them to do oral participation.
