Abstract

This research was aimed to determine the forms of errors and causes of errors that made by the students of class VIII SMP Negeri 4 Lingsar in the academic year 2017/2018 in solving algebraic factorization problems. The data were taken from the algebra factorization material test results and the result of interview with the students. The type of this research was quantitative descriptive research. The population in this research were all class VIII SMP Negeri 4 Lingsar in the academic year 2017/2018 which amounts to 133 students. The sampling technique used was cluster sampling and taken each of 10 students from each rank of student ability. The data analysis technique that used in this research was grouping error presented by Hadar. Based on the analysis of students answers showed that the dominant error performed on the high ability students were a unverified solution of 70.00% and misinterpreted language of 60.00%. On the medium ability students, the dominant error were unverified solution of 80.00%. While on the low ability students, the dominant error were a logically invalid inference of 100.00%. From the interview results obtained the cause of students making mistakes in solving the problems of algebra factorization. On the high ability students were the cause of the students do not write down what were known and asked from the problem, not understand the language change from the problem to become the language of mathematics and less thorough in conducting operations count. On the medium ability students were the cause of the student do not write down what were known and asked from the problem, less thorough in performing the counting operation and has not mastered the prerequisite materials. While on the law ability students were the cause of the students do no write down what were known and asked from the problem, do not understand the intent of the problem, less thorough reading of the problem so wrong in rewriting the data from the problem and have not mastered the prerequisite materials.
