Abstract

“The Street Lawyer” based on Gricean maxims of conversation. There are four maxims, maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of manner, and maxim of relation. Three points are discussed, description of the four maxims, the condition where the four maxims occurred, and the domination of certain maxims found in the novel. The method used in the research is descriptive qualitative. To collect the data documentation method is used which consists of three steps: Reading, Note taking, and Mapping. In analyzing data, the research also uses some steps. These steps are done chronologically. Those are Identification, Classification, Description, Explanation, and Conclusion. The conclusion is that there are some conversational implicature found in the novel. The speakers mostly violate maxims of conversation. Indeed, they infringed two or more maxims in same time. The violation occurred in certain conditions. It is due to the aim of the speakers when the conversation happened. Sometimes, the speaker infringes the maxim in order to convey some other intention indirectly and politely. Besides, of those four maxims, there are two types of maxims dominantly used in the novel. They are maxim of quantity and manner. It is affected by the topic of the novel and the writer’s purposes
