Abstract

This thesis analyzed about “English Slang Word Translation Found in Meg Cabot‟s Novel Princess Diary: Princess in Love”. The aim of this research is to explore the translation of slang expressions in Novel Princess Diary: Princess in Love and to show how equivalent the translation of the slang expressions is. The exploration includes finding the slang expressions itself, finding the strategy to translate slang, and describing the meaning equivalent of the slang expressions in its Indonesian translation. This thesis used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected manually from the novel Princess Diary: Princess in Love. The data were categorized based on three theories. The first theory was slang types proposed by Willis, the second one was translation strategies theory proposed by Newmark, and the third one was the equivalence theory by Bell. The results of this research show that there are two types of slang found in novel Princess in Love i.e. standard word and new invention; new invention appears more often. The translator applied five translation strategies in translating the slang expressions, i.e. expansion, paraphrase, transference, synonymy, and reduction. The translator applied four meaning equivalent degrees, i.e. fully equivalent, partly equivalent, different meaning, and no meaning. The fully equivalent and partly equivalent are categorized in equivalent, and the different meaning and no meaning are categorized in non-equivalent. From 66 data, there are 50 data in this research belong to equivalent (fully equivalent is 18 data and partly equivalent is 32 data).
