Abstract

This study aims to describe students‘ difficulties, factors that contributes to the students‘ difficulties in writing descriptive text especially in using simple present tense and teacher‘s perspective towards students‘ errors. This study was conducted in SMPN 1 Batulayar. It used Descriptive Qualitative Method. The population of this study was the 8th grade of SMPN 1 Batulayar in Academic Year 2016/2017 consisting 92 students. The sample that used in this study was 23 students from class VIII C. There are three procedures that conducted in this study which were data collection; writing test, questionnaire and interview. The data analysis in this research was the student‘s test that used nominal simple present tense by using to be (am, is are) and verb in simple present tense in descriptive text. The result of this study found that the difficulties faced by the students were mostly in starting their writing and putting right verbs in their sentences. Furthermore, the factors that caused the difficulties were students lack of grammar, vocabulary and students understanding in context and structure of simple present tense was in poor level.
