Abstract

This research aims to (1) discover senior students’ proficiency level in TOEFL, (2) to figure out whether or not there is any significant correlation between senior students’ TOEFL Listening scores and their overall achievement in Listening courses as well as their achievement in Listening I, II and III, and (3) to figure out the extents of correlatation between students’ TOEFL Listening scores and their overall achievement in Listening courses as well as their achievement in Listening I, II and III. The research was conducted in English Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Mataram in which the population was senior students of afternoon classes. 60 students from semester 6 to 12 who have passed Listening course I, II, and III became the sample of the research. The data were collected through TOEFL test and documentation of students’ scores in Listening courses and then were analyzed quantitatively. From research findings, it was discovered that the level of senior students’ proficiency is in preintermediate or adequate user with average score 427 which the scores range from 313 to 553. In addition, the comparison results of r values and r table denote there was significant correlation between variables. Moreover, the r value of +0.635 resulted from the correlation between students’ TOEFL Listening scores and their overall Listening courses scores indicated moderate positive correlation. Hence, overall Listening courses scores contributed about 40.3 % toward TOEFL Listening scores. Furthermore, separately, Listening I, II and II scores also correlate moderately with TOEFL Listening scores with r value 0.526, 0.518 and 0.478 respectively. Therewith, it effectively contributes toward TOEFL Listening scores about 27.6%, 26.9% and 22.8% in sequence. The scores range achieved in TOEFL Listening section which was from 32 to 59 implied the variety of students Listening skill. Also, result analysis found showed a decrease of the extent of the correlation and the contribution from Listening I scores to Listening III scores toward TOEFL Listening scores. However, the cause of the decrease has not been identified yet.
